About the Sheffield Academy of Martial Arts Lau Gar is one of the most respected Kung Fu styles in The UK today. Brought to England in the early sixties, the late George Wellington introduced Lau Gar to Sheffield in 1975. The foundations for the Sheffield Academy were born in 1980 with the opening of the Lau Gar club at St James’ Church on Scott Road in Pitsmoor by Sifu Graham Abdulla. The Academy is a member of the; British Kung Fu Association (BKFA) - the Uk's largest Chinese Martial Arts Association.World Association Kickboxing Organisation (WAKO) – The worlds largest kickboxing associationInternational Amateur Kickboxing Sport Association (IAKSA)
If you are considering taking up a Martial Art and Lau Gar Kung Fu or kickboxing appeals then come along and watch! - There are no obligations to join and the first proper lesson is FREE! Most people feel a little unsure when visiting a class for the first time. This is only natural; this initial meeting is the hardest thing that you will do! You will soon get into the training. You will discover our friendly and informative atmosphere and relaxed nature. You will be encouraged to participate in the class and this will enable you to ask as many questions as you need, with the Instructor taking time to answer all questions.Classes run on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday for children and adults. Here are some of the most common questions and answers;How much will it cost me to join ? Club Membership is £25 for adults; £20 Children (Occasionally there are special offers see instructor)How much will it cost me to train? Adults £6.00 per Lesson Juniors £4.50 per Lesson There is the facility to pay for a months training at a reduced cost; Adult £21 p/m =1 class per week; children £15 p/m = I class per week (these prices are a guide so please call the instructor for exact cost)
How many times a week can I train?
You are welcome to train as much as you like, Classes run on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday for children and adults. Is there an additional cost for each of my gradings? Yes, currently White to Purple is £26, Brown is £30, Black P.O.A.Do I need insurance? We recommend you purchase insurance - we can offer a BKFA licence this is up to you as an individual. What do I need to wear when I first start? We recommend some light comfortable clothing such as jogging bottoms and a t-shirt / sweat shirt. Only proper indoor pumps, Martial Arts footwear or bare feet are allowed on the matted floor areas. Am I too old / young to join a Martial Art School? We currently welcome new Students from 14 upwards in the adult classes and 5+ in the Children’s. There is no real age limit to Martial Art training as students are encouraged to work to their own comfortable level of ability. It is our recommendation that you speak to your doctor prior to starting any fitness program if you have any concerns.

Here at the Sheffield Academy of Martial Arts we have developed a program that is specially suited to ensure that you or your child reach the ultimate goal of Black Sash status. We follow a syllabus set by Master Jeremy Yau and the British Kung Fu Association The program is based on RESPECT, DISCIPLINE, DETERMINATION & CONFIDENCE. For you or your child to gain maximum benefit it is important to practise these life skills at home as well as in the Martial Arts classes.As a parent / guardian you play a vital role in ensuring your child attends classes regularly with a clean and presentable uniform and by bringing to the attention of the instructor any problems which they can help with. As a student it is important that you realise that to attain the maximum benefit from your training you must attend regularly. Together, working as a team we will ensure that you and/or your child will reach the very top.
